The temperature dependence of the diffraction pattern reveals that all the lattice constants jump at the first-order metal-nonmetal transition at 48 K without a change of the space group symmetry of Bb21m. In the neutron diffraction experiment, an additional magnetic reflection emerges below the Neel temperature, 56K. A possible model for this antiferromagnetic ordering is proposed, in which model magnetic moments align ferromagnetically within the double layer and antiferromagnetically between the double layers. This model reasonably explains the characteristic field dependence of the magnetoresistance observed at around 6 T.

The susceptibility for CdReO in the high temperature region () obeys a Curie-Weiss law with a large and negative Weiss temperature, which indicates that this system possesses a localized moment nature with antiferromagnetic interactions, leading to geometrical frustration. X-ray and electron diffraction measurements suggest the tetramerization of Re below , which induces a nano-sized stripe structure. From Cd NMR experiments, a large orbital susceptibility is identified by means of a - plot. Both the spin susceptibility and are found to decrease sharply below , signaling a decrease in density of states which is apparently caused by a developing partial energy gap at the Fermi surface.

Chemical state analysis is important to elucidate the origin of particles and its effect on the environment. However, the analysis is difficult because the amounts of elements in individual particles are considerably small. In the present study, electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) is applied to the chemical state analysis of individual uranium particles. As a result, uranium particles with diameters of 1m were able to be measured and clear electron backscatter patterns were observed. In addition, the patterns of UO particles were distinguished from those of UO particles.
